# Manifest utility setup example

Scope: the supplied original manifest_tool.py, not a general software installation service. Tested with the bundled Python runtime using an original fictional folder.

1. Check that Python supports hashlib.file_digest (the sample was checked on the supplied runtime).
2. Keep manifest_tool.py and the output manifest outside the folder being inventoried.
3. Run: python manifest_tool.py make SOURCE_FOLDER OUTSIDE_MANIFEST.json
4. Run: python manifest_tool.py verify SOURCE_FOLDER OUTSIDE_MANIFEST.json
5. Exit 0 with empty missing/changed/unexpected lists means these two inventories matched. It is not malware scanning or proof of backup recoverability.

An existing output manifest is not overwritten. Missing/non-directory roots and symlinks are refused. Resolve paths and permissions before retrying. No package or system settings were installed by these commands.
